Referral Traffic

In digital marketing, Referral Traffic is a category of web traffic that comes from links on other websites or from social media. It thus refers to visitors who come to a website from external sources, outside of search engines, and then reach the page through links from other websites, social media, blogs, or any place where a link to the site has been shared.

The term is derived from the verb “to refer and literally describes the process: when a user clicks on a link to another site, the destination site records the source site as a “referral” in its traffic data.

Referral traffic can come from a variety of sources, including blogs, news sites, social media websites, and more, and is usually seen as an indicator of the quality of a website’s content, as referral links usually occur when another site finds the content useful or interesting and decides to link to it.

Monitoring referral traffic can help you understand which sites are sending visitors to your site and which content is generating the most interest, providing valuable information for optimizing a digital marketing strategy.
