Pixel

In the context of marketing, a pixel is a small snippet of tracking code that is placed on a website to collect data about user behavior. This data can be used for various purposes, such as tracking conversions, optimizing advertising campaigns, or remarketing.

More generally, the term comes from the contraction of “picture element,” and originally, pixel refers to the smallest unit of a digital image that can be controlled or manipulated; each pixel has a specific color, and by combining millions of pixels, complex images can be created.

Taking advantage of this analogy, digital marketing has chosen the term “pixels” to describe the small pieces of code that, placed appropriately on a website, “light up” when a user visits the site, collecting information about that visitor. For example, the “Facebook Pixel” is a widely used tool that allows advertisers to track conversions, create target audiences and develop more effective remarketing strategies.
